Powerful God, Powerful Church

Jesus and His disciples had traveled north to Caesarea Philippi — a pagan city built at the foot of a towering rock cliff. It was in this very setting that Jesus turned to His disciples and asked who they believed Him to be. When Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God," Jesus responded with a stunning declaration of His own: that upon this confession, He would build a church so unshakeable that not even the gates of Hades would stand against it. The location was not accidental. Jesus was making a point in plain sight: every competing power, every dark gate, every stronghold of the enemy would bow before the church He was about to establish.

"Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." — Matthew 16:17–19 (NKJV)

1. When God Visits, He Is Answering

When God shows up in your work, your home, your family, or your business — He is not merely paying a visit. He is responding to your prayers.

Consider Peter. When Jesus asked to borrow his boat as a platform to preach, Peter had no great expectations from that moment. And many of us can relate — when prayers seem to go unanswered, it is easy to grow discouraged. But God is not finished. He may not answer the way we anticipated, but He is always answering in the best way possible.

Have you ever posed a question and received another question in return? God sometimes does exactly that. In the silence, in the waiting, He is drawing something out of us — a realization, a deeper trust, a readiness to receive. Perhaps the answer is not delayed. Perhaps the answer is in the waiting itself.

2. The Church Is Not Weak

The church was not designed to be fragile or passive. It was built to be strong — to press forward and overcome. Jesus did not say that the gates of hell would attack the church; He said they would not prevail against it. The image is of a church on the advance, breaking through darkness.

What are the "gates of hell"? Among other things: sickness, disease, and every force that seeks to diminish life and hope. The church has the keys — authority to bind and to loose — and it is meant to use them.

3. Why Has the Church Lost Its Power?

"What I meant was that you are not to associate with anyone who claims to be a believer yet indulges in sexual sin, or is greedy, or worships idols, or is abusive, or is a drunkard, or cheats people. Don't even eat with such people." — 1 Corinthians 5:11 (RCPV, Cebuano)

Paul's warning here is striking: he is not speaking about unbelievers in the world. He is speaking about professing believers who are active within the church. This is not a call to condemn anyone. It is, rather, a call to take seriously what we believe about Jesus — that His power is genuinely transformative. It changes lives. It leaves no one the same.

The reason many churches have lost their power in signs and wonders is this: they have drifted from holiness. Having been redeemed from the old life, we must stand firm in the transforming power of God. Holiness is not a burden — it is the posture of a people who have truly encountered Him.

4. Come Expecting

We are not an ordinary people. Therefore, do not treat going to church as ordinary. We are the church. We are extraordinarily supernatural.

Do not come to Sunday service out of habit or obligation alone. Come with an expectant heart — ready for a fresh encounter, a new experience of God's presence.

Every gathering is an opportunity for something to change: in you, in your family, in your circumstances.
